Let's go for the first stitches......Crawling with crochet

Updated: Mar 31

In the previous post I showed you how I had acquired my humble beginner's material but now I will have to start practicing the basic points...

I tell you: currently the usual languages in which I live are Spanish, English and Swedish. As for videos showing crochet skills, there is so much material on YouTube that it is overwhelming. You have such an amount of material. However, most of the videos show the wonders that expert crocheters and crocheters do and yes, they delight the beginner's eye, but…. How to learn the basics first?

So I spent time looking for videos that were truly educational. That is to say, that the stitches were seen clearly and quite close (I say this because I am as short-sighted as a mole and I want to see it big), that the explanations were slow and very clear and, if possible, that it had subtitles in languages not only to do it more inclusive but also to be able to learn the names of everything in several languages, (at least in Spanish and English) and thus, be able to read patterns (my next goal) in different languages without confusing the terms.

After many searches, the best I have found are the beginner courses from Ahuyama Crochet in spanish but with english subtitles. Elena (Ahuyama Crochet) is very famous as a crochet influencer and has created patterns for brands like Katia, for example.

She speaks slowly, she films very closed to the yarn and at the end of the course he even reviews the points to consolidate what he has learned. Then I found a wonderful channel of a great crocheter, Made with love by Glama . In her channel you can find the way all stitches are knitted and pictures of how they look. She knits slowly and everything is very clear.

Another perfect course for beginners in english is Crochet classes for beginners by Secret Yarnery. Along with the basic stitches she also includes a video with a list of basic supplies for all kind of situations. She also includes a othervideos at the end of the course with easy projects for beginners. And finally another wonderful option if you are learning is this video by Brunaticality.

I started practicing with the acrylic wool that had come in the "pack" and these are some of my first basic stitches.

Then a little more encouraged, I started trying to make a small pocket.

My big problem at this moment of practicing with the first stitches: slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, etc., has been TENSION. In the chains and the rest of the stitches, everything was either very tight or very loose. In the next post I will tell you how I remedy these problems and some tricks that I have learned.
